Welcome to Linton Village Online

An online community hub for the residents of Linton, a beautiful village nestled in the lower Wharfe valley near Wetherby in rural West Yorkshire

For Linton residents

Here is our first content for a new website for Linton and its residents. We'll keep working on it and we hope you'll find it helpful and relevant.

Please give us your ideas, thoughts and suggestions for its further development; you can let us know what you think here.

This site is provided by the Linton Residents Association (LRA) with the intent of providing a fresh and inclusive approach to serving Linton residents.

We aim to achieve better channels of communication, promote greater connectivity between residents and do all we can to improve village life, whilst maintaining the character, appearance and beauty of Linton.

Linton Village Coat of Arms

About Linton

Linton’s special interest owes much to the character and the appearance that the village retains to this day. Spending the majority of its historical life as a rural farming village, Linton remained virtually undeveloped well into the 20th century.

As other villages became subsumed and dominated by high-density development and inappropriate infill, generally with the loss of much of their historic core, Linton retained its character and appearance through the retention and sympathetic conversion of many of its historic structures.

The avoidance of high-density housing and the discreet location of later developments means that the appearance of Linton today is much the same as in was in 1920. Whilst the village now is almost entirely domestic, with very little working farming element remaining, the character of a sleepy rural location remains intact.

Our most famous landmark must be The Windmill Inn 🔗 with its wonderful beer garden and characterful building, parts of which date back over 400 years. We hope to see you there soon!

Linton Village Fundraisers

Over the past 12 years, the Linton Volunteer Fundraisers (LVF) have put on a variety of social events in the village that have provided an opportunity for people to come together and socialise. And whilst having fun, they have raised money for village projects and outside charities.

As of the summer of 2024, LVF events have raised £59,000. Some of this money has gone towards the creation of the village green, and improvements to the Memorial Hall, including a new kitchen, the building works for a new storage cupboard, new blinds, and replacement chairs.

There are usually three main events each year:

  • A lunch/supper and speaker event in the spring.

  • A tribute band night and supper in the autumn.

  • A family-focused Christmas Fayre in the winter.

Events are advertised on the notice boards at the Memorial Hall and The Windmill, through flyers distributed to all the houses in the village, and are also posted here on this website.

The Memorial Hall

The idea for a village hall dates back to just after the Second World War when the village acquired land and funded the construction of Linton Memorial Hall.

The first event took place in June 1953 with a village party to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the Second.

The hall remains an excellent village asset, and although there is currently good use with a variety of activities, the potential exists for further use of its extensive facilities.

The main hall has capacity for up to 110 people and can be used for a wide variety of events. There is a recently refurbished modern kitchen with a serving hatch to the main hall.

There is a lower ground floor, currently in use as a Montessori Nursery during term time.

There is also a committee room above the main hall suitable for small meetings.

The car park has space for 50 vehicles.

Linton Tennis Club

Linton Tennis Club, located next to the Memorial Hall, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in the early 20th century. Originally founded by local tennis enthusiasts, the club continues to be run by its members who pay an annual subscription.

The club is a recognised Lawn Tennis Association affiliate and benefits from its advice and support.

In 2024 the club has invested in resurfacing the two courts and new netting and provides an attractive venue for playing the game. There are changing room facilities and easy nearby parking in the Memorial Hall car park.

New members are very welcome. Currently, the cost of annual membership is £55 for adults and £25 for juniors.

There are no court booking arrangements, members can just turn up and play!
